SFBC Foundation’s work is to ensure that community-centered midwifery care, generated by and for diverse communities, is accessible and financially sustainable. With a focus on health equity and training BIPOC midwives, we are a site where community birth skills are taught and practiced and all birthing families feel safe, trusted, and celebrated.
Equitable Access to Midwifery Care
Your contribution supports access to care at the Birth Center for underinsured people who are most at risk of negative maternal and infant health outcomes in a traditional healthcare setting.
Medi-Cal only reimburses for approximately half the cost of a birth at the birth center, and we rely on donations to make up the balance.
Competitive Midwife Salaries
Your contribution helps to pay midwives an equitable salary, creating stable staffing, and allowing for a larger and more diverse applicant pool.
Insurance reimbursements are not sufficient to adequately compensate midwives for the relationship-based care offered at the Birth Center. We rely on donations to supplement midwives salaries to the prevailing market rate, enabling the Birth Center to accept more patients which in turn makes the operation more financially sustainable.
Midwifery Training
Your contribution helps to develop a strong and capable workforce of midwives, especially those from groups that are under-represented in the current midwifery workforce.
Being cared for by someone who reflects your race and/or culture has shown to be key in resolving disparities in health outcomes. Donations are used to fund a training program for new midwives.
